Seeing eight or nine fingers on a character in a Partch cartoon is not the only incongruity you’ll find. Galaxies of teeth, grotesque heads many times too large for the bodies, and hair that looks like nothing but black steel wool are all parts of the insanity that Pvt. He was born on St. Paul Island, in the Aleutians, twenty-eight years ago. Chief Petty Officer Virgil Franklin Partch I, who bears the paternal share of grief for having a cartoonist in the family, was stationed there.
