    Vladimir Donatovich Orlovskii was born in 1842 in Kyiv, Ukraine, and passed away in 1914 in Genoa, Italy. He was a Russian realist painter of Ukrainian origin and an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg.

    Vladimir Donatovich Orlovskii began his artistic training under Taras Shevchenko, who recognized his talent early on. He later studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under A.P. Bogolyubov, one of the leading Russian landscape painters of the 19th century. Orlovskii graduated with the title of class artist of the 1st degree, and quickly gained recognition for his landscape sketches painted in Crimea, the Kyiv province, and Finland.

    In 1868, Orlovskii was awarded a gold medal for his Crimean landscapes, which earned him a three-year government-sponsored residency in Paris, Switzerland, and Italy. His exposure to European art further refined his technique and broadened his stylistic range. In 1874, he was named an Academician, and in 1878, he received the title of Professor for his painting Haymaking.

    Orlovskii was a member of the Council of the Academy of Arts and played an active role in the development of art education in Kyiv. His work is known for its open forest views, marine scenes, and detailed natural settings, often rendered with subtle color and atmospheric depth.

    Wladimir Donatovich Orlovsky (1842-1914) studied at the art academy in St. Petersburg in 1861/67. He specialized in landscape painting and was able to go abroad as a fellow in 1869/72. In 1874, Orlovsky was active as an academic, which resulted in his appointment as a professor in 1878. His works are included in the collections of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Museum in Riga. (cbo)
