    Walter Emsley was born on February 12, 1860 in the outskirts of Manchester and died at the age of 78 on March 28, 1938. He was an interesting man, whose paintings and water color drawings have been known in Manchester and district for over a century. Many of his works have been purchased for public galleries, Manchester having purchased two of his works for their permanent collection.

    Emsley had to carve his own career from childhood and went to work at ten years of age in a chemist's shop, at two shillings weekly, his time as errand boy being from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Here he was blinded for two weeks through the explosion of a retort containing sulphuric acid.
