    Walter Stöhrer was born in Stuttgart in 1937. He completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer in Karlsruhe where he later studied at the art academy. In 1959, he left Karlsruhe to work as an independent artist in Berlin. Two years later he received his first solo exhibition.

    In the following years Stöhrer's work was honored with numerous awards, including the Villa Romana Fellowship. He became a member of the Academy of Arts in 1984. In the same year retrospectives in Düsseldorf and Saarbrücken provided a comprehensive insight into the artist's oeuvre. From 1986 Stöhrer taught at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin.
