Painting in the Chinese tradition in ink and color, Wei Dong blends traditional with contemporary elements, creating works with an astounding and often disquieting twist. After having taught himself the mastery of traditional Chinese painting, he studied western style painting at the university, earning a B.A. degree as well as the Best Graduate Award. Since then, his work has been exhibited around the world.
He began painting on paper, later also using canvas as a basis for his landscapes in the Ming tradition. In the foreground of these landscapes one often finds large figures of androgynous nudes. He often inserts elements which symbolize a different era in Chinese history, such as blue and white porcelain, army fatigues, red armbands, traditional silks with hammer and red ribbons instead of dragons, and Coca-Cola buttons as necklaces. Against the background of Chinese history, Dong holds up a mirror to contemporary culture which he sees dominated by lust, and the hunger for power and wealth.
He had solo exhibitions in galleries in China, the U.S. and Europe, as well as group exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Bern (Switzerland, 2005); La Biennale de Issy (France, 1999); Phillips Exeter Academy (U.S., 1998); Gotemburg Art Museum (Sweden, 1995); the National Art Gallery and the Workers Palace, Bejing (China, 1992), and others.
His work is in private and corporate collections.
