    Important German painter, draughtsman and graphic artist (1929 Schönebeck/Elbe - 2004 Leipzig), considered a founder of the "Leipzig School" alongside Wolfgang Mattheuer, Bernhard Heisig and Heinz Zander. He apprenticed as a painter in Schönebeck (1945-46) and attended the master crafts school in Magdeburg. He studied at the HGB Leipzig (1948-50) under Elisabeth Voigt, Walter Arnold, and Ernst Hassebrauk, was a member of the Schönebeck Circle, and was influenced by Katharina Heise. From 1950 to 1953, he studied at the University of Greifswald, passed the state examination in 1953, and worked as a research assistant at the Central House for Folk Art in Leipzig (1953-54).
