    The painter and portraitist Wilhelm Hensel studied under Johann Christoph Frisch, exhibited his first work at the Academy in 1812, and later served in the Prussian army during the war against Napoleon. He then lived in Rome for five years until 1823 on a scholarship from the Prussian king, after which he returned to Berlin, where he worked as a professor at the Academy and eventually as court painter. His portraits enjoyed great popularity in the upper social circles of the time.
