In 1922 Wilhelm studied painting in Aktsaal at the School of Applied Arts Münster, and in 1926 received a study grant from the state of Westphalia at the Bauhaus Dessau and Josef Albers. Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger, where some of the artists he studied with in 1929 in Paris. In 1930 Wilhelm did freelance in Essen / Ruhr. From 1933 to 1939 Imkamp was exclusively a portrait and landscape painter. His abstract art was created in secret to avoid impending prohibition in 1939. Around this time he moved to Giessen.
