The following biography is from F. Lennox Campello:

Willem De Looper was born in Holland. He became a US citizen, and lived in Washington D.C. where he became associated (somewhat late) with a group of painters known as the Washington Color School. De Looper's early lyrical work was created by pouring thin washes of color over unprimed canvas. Here blue in all its shadings often dominates. His later works frequently gravitated to deeper colors, metallic paints and thicker surfaces.

De Looper achieved a very respected regional importance, and his work has been exhibited nationally for over two decades and is part of the National Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Museum of American Art, The Phillips Collection (where he was a former employee), and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Willem de Looper died of emphysema on January 30, 2009. He was 76 years old.
