He became a US citizen, and lived in Washington D.C. where he became associated (somewhat late) with a group of painters known as the Washington Color School. De Looper's early lyrical work was created by pouring thin washes of color over unprimed canvas. Here blue in all its shadings often dominates. His later works frequently gravitated to deeper colors, metallic paints and thicker surfaces.
