About William Cresswell

  • Biography

    William Nichol Cresswell was born in London, England on March 12, 1818. Cresswell studied under several prominent British artists. He immigrated to Canada in 1848 and moved to a remote farm in Ontario. He was a member of the Society of Canadian Artists, Ontario Society of Artists,and a founder of the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1887 he fled the cold climate and spent the winter in southern California. He planned on moving there but died the following summer at his home in Seaforth, Ontario. Working in oil and watercolor, he produced animal, landscape, and marine subjects.
