    William McKay was a Scottish artist born in Gifford, Haddington. He studied art in Edinburgh and was greatly influenced by the painters of the Hague school during his travels to Holland. Upon his return to Scotland, he sought to apply their method of working outdoors and capturing the effects of light and atmosphere on the landscape. McKay's paintings depicted pastoral landscapes and rural Scottish life. He was awarded an honorary LLD by the University of Edinburgh in 1919 and published 'The Scottish School of Painting (1906)'
