William Gale was born in 1823. William Gale was a painter of the Pre-Raphaelite School, who exhibited annually at the Royal Academy between 1844-93, but was never elected a member. The artist was born in London and trained at Sass's Academy and then at the Royal Academy Schools. As a young man he travelled to Italy and among his early works were genre subjects set in Rome.
