About William George Beckman

  • Biography

    William Beckman, a painter of nearly photographically conceived figures and landscapes, was born in 1942 in Maynard, Minnesota. He received a BA degree from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, and MA and MFA degrees from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. His meticulous technique involves shaving layers off the surface of his paintings with a razor to create a lustrous surface that is not varnished.

    William Beckman was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design, New York City, in 1992, and Academician in 1994. He has been a visiting artist at Towson University, Towson, Maryland. He gave a lecture on his work at Arizona State University, Tempe, in 2003.
