In 1852 the company became insolvent, and Muckley joined the Birmingham School of Art. While there he won one of the eight scholarships competed for by students at all the art schools in Britain. He went on to study in London and Paris and obtained four art degrees of the highest class. Muckley was head of the Burslem School of Art for five years, then in the late 1850s he became headmaster of the Wolverhampton School of Art.
