    Willy Guggenheim lived from 1900 to 1977. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule St. Gallen in 1919-1921. Subsequently, he moved to Berlin and became a student of Emil Orlik at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule. From 1923 to 1932 he lived in Paris where he attended the Académie Julian (1923), the Académie André Lhote (1923-1926) and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

    In 1930, he became acquainted with the art dealer Zborowski, who signed him, gave him a studio and gave the artist name Varlin. After the death of his sponsor, Varlin settled down in Zurich.
