Born in Dusseldorf, Gaul spent his childhood and youth there from 1931 to 1944 because of the transfer of his father as a teacher to East Prussia. Shortly before the end of the war he was drafted in 1944 as a 16-year-old soldier on the Eastern Front.

After his graduation in 1948 in Dusseldorf Gaul began a sculpture apprenticeship. From 1949 to 1950, he studied art history and German studies at the University of Cologne. From 1950 to 1953, he studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Willi Baumeister and Manfred Henninger.
