Yuan Xiaocen was an artist of traditional Chinese painting, a sculptor, and a professor. He was born in Puding County, Guizhou Province. He was self-taught except for some instruction by Gao Jianfu and Gao Qifeng from the Lingnan Area.
When enrolled in the Department of Literature and History in Yunnan University in 1938, he specialized in traditional Chinese painting, sculpture and poems. He sold paintings to pay his tuition fee.
