About Yeong Geol Choi

  • Biography from K Auction

Born in 1968, Yeong Geol Choi's Western style of painting with the usage of Korean traditional ink on paper, Choi delicately recreates a Korean landscape on his canvas. Because it is drawn with ink, unlike Western paintings, it is impossible to retouch or repair.

His attention to detail and meticulous touch is jaw-dropping as it requires a tremendous amount of effort to execute such delicacy using Korean ink. In The Summer I, Choi depicts running water along the valley and beautiful scenery with his careful technique; in this work, Choi manages to create a Korean summer landscape with his ability to draw with calm yet attractive colors.

Choi reminds us that as humans, we are a part of a larger realm or cosmos and we cannot possibly fully comprehend the essence of nature and the ultimate truth, but is the cultivation of interactions, experiences and appreciation that is held important.
