He worked primarily in oils but has done some work in watercolors and tempera. Throughout the years he had numerous showings of his paintings, many of which were done in the Massachusetts art colony of Rockport. Der Garabedian was sent alone by his parents to the United States at the age 15 from Harpoot, Armenia; they, and other Armenians, remained to face the persecution and eventual massacre by the Turks that took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
