He left Budapest around 1928 and traveled extensively through Europe, the United States and Canada, painting and exhibiting during his travels. Heimlich settled in Montreal, Quebec, in 1930, where he established his first studio. That same year, he took part in his first Canadian exhibition, a show held by the Exhibitions Association of the City of St. John, New Brunswick, at which he was awarded first prize.
