Wisby was born in London, England in 1870, and by 1897 had relocated to San Francisco, California. There he met and married Mary Anne Fossey and the couple stayed in San Francisco. While in the city, he worked for Shreves (jewelry store) for a few years as an engraver. He had no formal training in art but often took sketching trips to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, and created oil paintings from his sketches.
