He moved west in 1891 and lived in Portland for three years where he was first exposed to art. Moving to California in 1894, he settled in the small town of Sisson (now Mount Shasta). While working for a lumber company, he began painting landscapes without the benefit of instruction. Doty admired the work of artists Wm Keith and Wm Adam, but was most influenced by the atmospheric works of Thomas Moran. In 1921 he and his family settled in Chico, CA into a large old home with a high attic studio and a fine north light. During his long life he became a highly skilled colorist and interpreter of...
