He was born in 1860 in Bridgeport, Connecticut and spent much of his career in New York where he was a member of the National Academy of Design, Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America and the National Arts Club. He was an instructor at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and did much painting in the Hudson River Valley and Adirondack Mountains. His early art training was at the National Academy of Design School, which he attended for five semesters.
