He attended the Art Institute of Chicago's Junior School summer programs when he was 13 and 14 and a local drawing competition won him a scholarship to the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Mark Daily left the academy after two and a half years and rented a studio with a buddy in Chicago. Mark Daily left the academy after two and a half years and rented a studio with a buddy in Chicago. He served in the Army Reserves during Vietnam and after his service he rented a studio in Taos, New Mexico. He stayed in New Mexico for twelve years painting and selling enough to get by but not truly applying himself to his art.
