Her parents emphasized a deep appreciation and reverence for the land, and she and her three siblings were allowed to spend much time exploring on foot and horseback. Abbott attended Scripps College in Claremont and majored in art. She returned home and studied with Douglass Parshall (1899-1990), Richard Meryman (1891-1963), and Clarence Hinkle (1880-1960). From these men with whom she occasionally went on plein-air painting trips, she gained a solid background in realist and impressionist painting.
