She may also have studied with her father, Charles A.C. Gengembre, a well-known French architect . She came to America with her parents in 1849. The family first settled in Cincinnati where she painted portraits of prominent persons and did illustrations for Henry Howe's book "Historical Collections of the Great West" (1851). Several years later, the family moved to Manchester, Pennsylvania, and Sophie married the artist, Walter Anderson, with whom she had collaborated in Cincinnati on a portfolio of portraits of US Protestant Episcopal Bishops.
