Susan attended school in New Milford, graduating in 1964 and never left pastoral Litchfield County, western Connecticut along the Housatonic River, where she found constant inspiration in the surrounding natural beauty. Her only family connection to art is a great-uncle (Zimmerman), a sculptor in Germany, who fell to his death from a scaffold while working on a church, and a distant cousinship to William Merritt Chase.
