When he was ten, his family moved from Dallas to a ranch in Lincoln County, New Mexico, where his father artist Ken Payne began painting full time after leaving a career as an airline and crop-dusting pilot. He had this little adobe studio, and he had his library there; I'd go in there and read Will James' book and look at pictures of paintings by Charles Russell and Frederic Remington.
