He was the son of Frank Anderson, a Hudson River School painter, and although his father died when he was eight years old, Victor drew and painted from the time he was a youngster. When he enrolled in the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he was accomplished enough to go directly into the life-drawing class. He studied with Birge Harrison at Woodstock, New York during one summer and also took classes from Hobart Nichols and Herman Dudley Murphy.
