Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up there, working as a house painter until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served from 1942 to 1945 in France and was assigned the grim task of burying soldiers. Using the GI Bill, he went to the Brooklyn Museum Art School from 1951 until 1955 where...
