A famous Canadian railroad executive and a prodigious artist whose works are in several museum collections, Sir William Cornelius Van Horne was born in what is now Frankfort, Illinois and died in Montreal, Quebec, where he had lived since 1882. He is discussed in virtually every comprehensive Canadian history book and encyclopedia as the General Manager in charge of building the first transcontinental railway in Canada (the Canadian Pacific Railway or CPR), which unified the country and, at the time, was the longest railway in the world (1800 miles excluding the eastern network laid down earlier).
