Maurice Sterne was born in Memel, Latvia on August 8, 1878. Sterne came to the U. S. in 1890 and began his art training at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York City. After 1914 he divided his time between Italy and the U.S. An internationally recognized artist, he was one of the first artists to discover Bali and popularize scenes of that area.
