He studied at the Hamburg school of applied arts, the Weimar academy under L. von Kalckreuth, and in Munich as well as at the Académie Julian in Paris under G. Ferrer and A. Bouguereau. He was a co-founder of the Hamburgische Künstlerclub and became a professor in Berlin in 1906. He also designed tapestries and dress reform clothes.
