Anni Baldaugh, born in Holland, was the daughter of Anthonius Hendricus Schade van Westrum, Baldaugh, an officer with the Royal Indonesian Forces. She was the youngest of nine children. Baldaugh studied art in Haarlem under Petrus Johannes Arendzen, followed by study in Vienna under the miniaturist and caricaturist Theodor Zaschke. Later she studied in Munich with Lothar von Kunowsky, and also in Paris where she became a member of the Beaux Arts Institute.
