In 1924 he was admitted to the Stuttgarter Kunstgewerbeschule and a year later he attended the Stuttgart Academy of Art where he studied under Arnold Waldschmidt and Anton Kolig, whose class he also taught a little later. In 1924 he was admitted to the Stuttgarter Kunstgewerbeschule and a year later he attended the Stuttgart Academy of Art where he studied under Arnold Waldschmidt and Anton Kolig, whose class he also taught a little later. He devoted himself to mural painting and established his own workshop for mural art at the Academy. Study trips through Europe inspired him to paint numerous landscapes. Mahringer was impressed especially by the landscapes of Max Slevogt as well as the paintings of the German Expressionists.
