Arthur Dupagne was born in 1895 in Liege, Belgium. An engineer by training, Arthur Dupagne made his first trip to the Congo in 1927, where he worked on the exploitation of diamond fields. There Dupagne developed his burgeoning talent as a sculptor, which he had first developed while attending evening classes under the direction of Georges Petit at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège. During his time in the continent, Dupagne studied the ancestral statuary art of African tribes as well as the anatomy and gestures of its native peoples. After Dupagne's final return to France in 1935, he devoted himself entirely to his artistic career.
