At the age of twelve, he began a three-year apprentice ship to Anders Gottman, a portrait and genre painter in Norrkoping. This studied was followed by time in Stockholm, where he studied with Carl Julius Olsen and with Carl Larsen, a popular genre painter whom he later credited as being highly influential on his painting career.
