Newman spent four years studying under Otto Grunderman. He received a scholarship to the National Academy of Art in New York City from 1881-1884. Newman later enrolled in Le E'Cole de Beaux (1885) in Paris for three years where he received instruction from Gustave Boulanger and Jules LaFebvre.
