Following a motorbike accident in 1943, he began creating plaster objects, inspired by his dentistry techniques as opposed to any artistic training. From 1943-48, Willsher studied engineering and later trained as a dental technician. Following a motorbike accident in 1943, he began creating plaster objects, inspired by his dentistry techniques as opposed to any artistic training. In 1956 he began working with wood, creating domestic objects such as lamps. His merging of domestic objects with abstract shapes was popular and began his shift towards the sphere of sculpture, resulting in his first solo exhibition in 1967.
