Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein, initially a student of his father Christian Leberecht Vogel, was born in Wildenfels, Saxonyin in 1788. From 1804 he attended the Dresden Academy. After sojourns in St. Petersburg and Rome, he was appointed professor at the academy in Dresden and became court painter in 1824. In 1831 he was ennobled (von Vogelstein).
