After training to be a cabinet maker, Jessen worked as a house painter in the farms on the marshlands of North Friesia. Between 1848 and 1854 he taught himself to paint portraits. After training to be a cabinet maker, Jessen worked as a house painter in the farms on the marshlands of North Friesia. Between 1848 and 1854 he taught himself to paint portraits. In 1853 he gave up cabinet making and devoted himself entirely to painting. From 1856 to 1865 he studied at the Copenhagen Academy under V.N.Marstrand. He traveled to Paris and Italy on a scholarship. He lived in Klockries from 1869 to 1870 and in Hamburg from 1871 to 1875, before returning to Deezbüll.
