For political reasons he decamped to the U.S. in 1870. After several years in NYC, he moved to San Francisco in 1876. He was based there except for a period of about five years when he lived in the backwoods of Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties leading, according to the Morning Call, "a careless bohemian life." For political reasons he decamped to the U.S. in 1870. After several years in NYC, he moved to San Francisco in 1876. He was based there except for a period of about five years when he lived in the backwoods of Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties leading, according to the Morning Call, "a careless bohemian life." While in the rural areas, he painted several scenes of Fort Ross and lived among the Pomo Indians for a while.
