In the capital, he was able to establish himself with his designs for book illustrations, stained glass windows and wall paintings and in 1910 was a co-founder of the New Secession. Initially influenced by Impressionism he adopted a more expressionist manner from 1913 onwards and soon became one of the most famous German expressionists.
