He studied at the Unterrichtsanstalt am Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin with Emil Doepler the Younger and Max Friedrich Koch, and later at the Academy of Karlsruhe with Caspar Ritter. Kips painted some rooms at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 and went on a three-year study trip through Italy.
