In 1970, he began taking lessons from portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler and with Richard Seyffert at the Art Students League of New York City. In 1971 he was selected to study with Boston painter Robert Douglas Hunter, and two years later he began study at the Atelier of R.H. Ives Gammell at the Fenway Studio Building in Boston.
