Eugen Dekkert was generally known in Scotland as "Eugene" as the pronunciation of his name (Oigun) was a little unusual for some Scots. Dekkert was born in 1865 in Stettin, Germany aka Szczecin (and now part of Poland under the Potsdam Agreement of 1945) and he came to live in Scotland as a young man. He first lived in Glasgow and then settled in the East Neuk of Fife in the early 20th century. He and his wife Emma were living in St Monans at both the 1901 and 1911 census. The fact that he... Dekkert was born in 1865 in Stettin, Germany aka Szczecin (and now part of Poland under the Potsdam Agreement of 1945) and he came to live in Scotland as a young man. He first lived in Glasgow and then settled in the East Neuk of Fife in the early 20th century. He and his wife Emma were living in St Monans at both the 1901 and 1911 census. The fact that he lived there explains why he often painted the harbour at St Monans. It was written in 1906 that "the sea is never absent from his work" and that his style was "strongly individual".
