As a young man encouraged by his grandfather, it looked as though he would pursue a military career. In his fourth year at West Point military academy, however, he suffered a serious accident, which put an end to any possibility of military service. This fateful event changed the course of his life, and he began to pursue more artistic avenues. Early in his life, the Knowles family moved to Canada where he received his early education in Guelph, Ontario. As a young man encouraged by his grandfather, it looked as though he would pursue a military career.
