Setting his goals on becoming a serious painter, he studied with Alice Knowlton and William Morris Hunt in Boston. In 1886, Richardson sailed to Paris to join his friends Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf, and others to continue his art education at the Academie Julian where he was a student of Gustave Boulanger, Lucien Doucet, Jules Lefebvre, Jean Paul Laurens, and Benjamin Constant. He exhibited at the Salon in 1889, 1890, and l894-1899, receiving Honorable Mention for A Summer Evening--Etaples in 1899.
