Her father was descended from Philip Sherman of Dedham, Essex, England, who came, in 1633 to Roxbury, Massachusetts, and afterwards, with eighteen others, founded the town of Portsmouth and the Colony of Rhode Island. Her father was descended from Philip Sherman of Dedham, Essex, England, who came, in 1633 to Roxbury, Massachusetts, and afterwards, with eighteen others, founded the town of Portsmouth and the Colony of Rhode Island.
